This site is located in the town of Dieburg, Darmstadt City, Hesse State of Germany. It has a protection area of 0.7 km2. The Messel Pit Fossil Site provides the richest scientific information about the palaeoecological environment during the Eocene Epoch (57 million to 36 million years ago). The site is a unique example of the evolution of early mammals, including unusually well-preserved mammal fossils – both integral bone fossils and visceral fossils of the mammals of the same period.
