Lorentz National Park, Indonesia

  • Reference work entry
  • First Online:

This park is located in the coastal area of Papua Province (the former Irian Jaya Province) in far eastern Indonesia near Arafura Se. It has a core protection area of 25,056 km2. It is the largest protected area in Southeast Asia and the world’s only area that continuously protects ecological systems from snowy mountains to tropical oceans, including low-elevation wetlands. Located in the collision zone between two continental plates, the area has complex geological conditions with active orogeny and traces of important glacial actions. Unearthed fossils illustrate the evolution of life in New Guinea. The large numbers of endemic animals and plants highlight the rich biodiversity in the region.
