Longitudinal Valley Suture of Eastern Taiwan

This suture zone is located in the longitudinal valley in eastern Taiwan. This zone is oriented NNE and is 150 km long. The valley, which is a fault zone, is approximately 5–7 km wide, and both sides are composed of straight faults. This fault zone is sinistral (strike-slip with left-lateral motion), and the coastal ranges to the east have moved at least 170 km north. The eastern basin also has characteristics of westward thrusting. This fault zone is an active seismic zone. The geological and geophysical features on both sides of the fault zone are significantly different, indicating that they are composed of different types of crust. Glaucophane schist, which is an indicator of high-pressure metamorphism, is present in this fault zone. Melange (Lichi Formation) is also present, and scientists agree that it is a typical suture zone that serves as the boundary between the Eurasian and the Philippine Sea Plates.
