Latosols form in tropical rainforest and monsoon forest environments by strong desilication and bio-enrichment. They are highly acidic and dark red soils with abundant iron-aluminium oxides. In China, they are mainly located in the Leizhou Peninsula, Hainan Island, and parts of Yunnan, Guangxi, and southern Taiwan. They are located along the northern margin of the tropical zone south of 22°N latitude. The soils have high viscosity and high acidity but are poor in nutrients.
