Langkawi Geopark, Malaysia

This geopark is located on the island of Langkawi in Malaysia. It has an area of 478 km2, and it became a global geopark in 2007. It was the first geopark in Malaysia and in Southeast Asia. The Machincang Formation, a 550-million-year-old sequence of interbedded sandstone and shale in Datai Bay in the northwestern part of the island, is the oldest rock in the country. The Chuping Limestone at Pulau Dayang Bunting and the northeastern part of Langkawi forms beautiful limestone outcrops. These features indicate that the sedimentary environment at that time was a river delta and shallow sea environment. The landscape diversity of the Machingcang Formation is also reflected in the numerous beautiful coast types: rocky beaches, sandy beaches, pebble beaches, abrasive platforms, sediment platforms, gravel dams, caves, and islands.
