La Niña occurs when the water temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean are 0.5 °C lower than normal for six consecutive months. It is the opposite of the El Niño phenomenon, and it means ‘girl’. It is also called the ‘Anti-El Niño’. The La Niña phenomenon occurs approximately once every 3–5 years, and its appearance has a large influence on the regional and global climate.
