Synonym: Chestnut soil
This soil forms by weak humus accumulation, clayification and intense calcification under temperate semi-arid steppe vegetation. The upper part of the section is chestnut in colour, and the lower part contains mycelium-like, plaque-like or reticular calcium deposits. Additional features include salinization, alkalization, and meadowization. Kastanozems are the main soils in grasslands in China. They are mainly located in the eastern and central parts of the Inner Mongolian Plateau, the eastern Ordos Plateau, the Datong Basin and the foothills of the southeast Daxing’anling Mountains.
