A waterfall is a flow of water that pours down from the longitudinal section of the steep slope of a riverbed or from a hanging cliff. A waterfall in a karst area is called a karst waterfall, and the associated landform is known as a karst waterfall landscape. In addition to waterfalls that form along the cliffs along rivers, karst areas contain waterfalls that form from underground rivers or karst springs. The permeabilities of different carbonate rock strata are different. Non-soluble rock layers are sometimes located between the layers of carbonate rock. Due to the abundant rainfall and active tectonic movements, there are numerous fissures; hence, karst waterfalls in southwestern China are particularly well developed. The Huangguoshu Waterfall clusters in Guizhou Province and the Detian Waterfall in Daxin County, Guangxi Province, are the most famous. The Large and Small Cascade Waterfalls in Shilin County, Yunnan Province are equally well known (Fig. 25).
