The Jiaojia gold deposit is an important and famous gold deposit in China. It is composed of more than 10 medium and large gold mines within a 60 km2 area between Zhaoyuan City and Laizhou City, northwestern Jiaodong Peninsula. It has proven gold reserves of several hundred tons. The Jiaojia gold mine is the biggest of the mines. Shandong has a long gold mining history. The ‘Song History–Commodities Chronicle’ (1023–1032) reports that gold mining in Tiansheng, Deng (now Penglai County) and Lai (now Ye County) amounted to several thousand taels of gold production annually. Gold mined from the deposit accounts for 89% of the gold production of the entire country. The discovery of the Jiaojia gold deposit and the understanding of its formation characteristics have facilitated the development of gold mineralisation theories, led to a booming period of gold exploration, and greatly enhanced gold mining and production in China.
