The Hotan jade occurrence is a contact metasomatic deposit and is the most famous source of jade in China. The ore bed of the deposit is located along a stream in the Alamas Valley, a tributary of the Keriya River in the Kunlun Mountains, approximately 80 km south of Hotan County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The primary ore bed is located on the contact zone between Late Hercynian granodiorite and altered dolomitic marble associated with metamorphic clastic-carbonate rock of the Proterozoic Pixian System, which has obvious metasomatic alteration and zonation. The Hotan jade ores are located in the marble zone of the deposit. The mineral composition of Hotan jade is tremolite. The Hotan jade can be classified according to its colour, such as opaque white, greenish white, and green. High-quality Hotan white jade is world-famous.
