Heilu soil is characterised by a thick black clay layer. It develops on loess parent material under the semi-arid grassland vegetation on the Loess Plateau, and it contains a dark and thick layer of organic matter and a pseudomycelium calcium deposit. There is always a top layer on the soil profile, and the entire section is calcareous. Heilu soil is the remnant soil upon cultivation on the parent loess, and it is mainly found in northern Shaanxi, northwestern Shanxi, eastern Guizhou and central Yunnan.
