This geopark is located in central Romania and covers an area of 1 km2. It became a global geopark in 2005. The area contains numerous glacial lakes as well as mountains more than 2,000 m high, deep canyons, caves, forests, grasslands, orchards and farmland. Its human history extends from the Stone Age to the Roman period and from the Middle Ages to today. The many historic sites include the ancient Roman capital of Dacia Province, several medieval churches and fortresses, modern castle ruins and houses of aristocratic officials.
