Play in Innovative Pedagogies
This chapter explores the role of play in early years within three well-known examples of innovative pedagogy. Through examples of alternative educational models, differing understandings of how the term play is used, is understood, and exists in innovative education today are recorded. This entry for the encyclopedia aims to show that play in innovative pedagogy is different to just being recess in more traditional settings and that it has been incorporated into the pedagogy, culture, curriculum, and environment. The first example is Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten (3–6 years) which explores open-ended self-initiated free play. The second is Montessori Early Years (3–6 years) which looks at playful learning and choice within an adult-created environment. The third is democratic education (usually mixed ages from 4 years) where the children have total freedom to play within the limits of agreed community rules.
