Definition

Non-university professional education identifies a broad variety of educational offers at the tertiary level, classified at least at level 5 of the International Standard Classification of Educational Degrees (ISCED) that usually require for access a completed upper level secondary qualification (ISCED 3 level) and that are offered outside the university sector (Bathmaker 2017). While university education is expected to deliver more general skills that are transferable, professional curricula should be oriented toward the development of specific professional skills related to a distinct economic sector and/or profession. They respond to the increasing demand from the labor market in knowledge-oriented economies for advanced professional skills that cannot be acquired only on the job and go beyond qualifications provide by upper secondary vocational training at ISCED...
