Brief Outline of the History and Demographics of Suriname
Suriname is situated on the north coast of South America. It borders on French Guyana to the east, Guyana to the west, and Brazil to the south. The country’s surface area is slightly less than 165,000 km2. This makes it the smallest independent state in South America. According to the 2012 census, Suriname has 541,638 inhabitants, of whom 369,146 live within a 30 km radius around the capital of Paramaribo.
In the seventeenth century Suriname was first colonized by the English and later by the Dutch, who established large-scale plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa. In 1863, the slaves were declared free. Next, indentured workers from India and Java (Indonesia) were imported to work on the plantations.
