Inclusion of Humanoid Robots in Human Society: Ethical Issues

Abstract

The inclusion of humanoid robots in the human society raises ethical questions beyond those of the spreading applications of Artificial Intelligence, automation or robotization in general. The humanoid shape itself excites the natural tendency of anthropomorphism and hence attribution of human features to a machine that does not possess them. Android robots push this tendency further, but the search for perfect human resemblance in this case questions the nature of human beings. Are humans reducible to their animated avatars? Should we then endow these machines with personhood and should they therefore possess rights and duties?
