Ludwig Föppl (∗February 2, 1906 in Leipzig, Germany; †May 13, 1976 in Munich, Germany) was a mechanical engineer and mathematician and professor with the focus on engineering mechanics.
Family and Education
The father of Ludwig Föppl was August Otto Föppl, professor of engineering mechanics and graphical statics at TH Munich. His brother in law was the physicist Ludwig Prandtl. His brother Otto Föppl was professor at the TH Braunschweig. Föppl studied mechanical engineering at TH Munich and physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. He then transferred to the University of Göttingen where he was promoted to Dr. Phil. in mathematics by David Hilbert with a thesis titled Stable arrangements of electrons in the atom. In 1914 Föppl acquired the venia legendi in mathematics at the University of Würzburg.
Professional Career
In 1913 Föppl became assistant of the mathematician Felix Klein in Göttingen. He then transferred to Würzburg where he taught as Privatdozent at the institute...
