Scheduling deals with the allocation of resources to tasks over given time periods, and its goal is to optimize one or more objectives (Pinedo 2008).

Role and History of Scheduling

The role of scheduling is the assignment of resources to working jobs over time. Scheduling is an operational decision-making process affecting company and organization performance and its ability to add value and to respect contracts. The application of scheduling is wide, starting from manufacturing and production systems to information processing environments as well as transportation and distribution systems.
