Definition

Stretching means tensile forming of a workpiece (sheet metal part, bulk metal part) by a tensile force which is externally applied and acting in the longitudinal axis of the workpiece.

Theory and Application

Generally, three different technological processes with various objectives can be differentiated in stretching (DIN 8585-2 2003).

  1. 1.

    Elongating (stretching) to increase the dimensions of the workpiece in the direction of force, e.g., in order to adapt to specified dimensions

  2. 2.

    Elongating (stretch leveling) in order to remove distortions from bars, profiles, and pipes and to remove dents from sheets

  3. 3.

    Elongating (straightening by stretch bending) in order to extend the rolling stock during (after) rolling, expressed by the degree of stretching
