Definitions

There is growing pressure on vital resources like food and water due to a surge in population. Thus, water scarcity and food security are emerging issues faced by the world population. Water scarcity can be defined as the point where their need for water usage in all sectors cannot be fully satisfied. Water can be called scarce not only when the water is not enough for need of all sectors but also if there is a lack of access to potable water which is required for all human needs (Chakraborti et al. 2019). Around 1.2 billion people in the world live in the places where there is physical scarcity of water and around 1.6 billion people face water shortage as their countries do not have enough infrastructure to take water from rivers and aquifers (Amarsinghe and Sharma 2009; Sharma and Bharat 2009 cited in Chakraborti et al. 2019). The main determinants of water scarcity are climate change, overuse of the water sources, and increased pollution (Chakraborti et al. 2019).
