Introduction

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is an office of the United Nations located at Vienna. The entry discusses its establishment and role in providing programs across the globe to support states in their fight against crime and the drug problem.

Establishment

In 1997, the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime were combined to form the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention. At the time, the name appeared to capture elements from both offices with the words “drug control” taken directly from the United Nations Drug Control Programme and “crime prevention” taken directly from the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime. These two agencies were merged because the United Nations (UN) Secretary General created an association of UN agencies called the United Nations Development Group.
