An innovation network is a group (set) of a number of autonomous entities (including companies and their branches, universities, research centers, government institutions, and private individuals), interconnected via a series of direct or indirect relations, which cooperate in order to achieve synergy effects in the pursuit of common objectives focused on research and development, practical use of the possessed and jointly developed knowledge, and then implementation and diffusion of innovations.


Contemporary world is dominated by the growing internationalization of economic activity and its coopetition (situation where competitors simultaneously cooperate and compete with each other (Bengtsson and Kock 2000)) not only on the national level but also internationally, or even globally, as well as the dynamically progressing ICT revolution.
