Assessment of Climatic Variability Effect on Millet Production and Yield

Abstract

The information on climatic variability with its impacts on crop yields are needed more than ever especially on grains that serve as staple food in most part of the world. Hence, the objectives of the authors of this chapter were to collect and analyze rainfall, temperature, and millet yield data of the six states in North Central Nigeria, to generate geo-spatial variation maps for the chapter area using GIS techniques. All the six states in North Central of Nigeria (Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, and Plateau) including Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, were selected, and the rainfall and temperature data for 22 years (1991–2012) were used for the analysis. The relationship between millet yield and rainfall gave a negative relationship, while the relationship of both rainfall and temperature on millet yield showed a strong negative relationship deducing that there is variation in the climatic requirement. There is no doubt that farmers increasingly need detailed maps of this kind to plan crop planting schemes and monitor rate of yield (smart agriculture).
