Historical Background

Transient receptor potential (TRP) is a superfamily of channels that control the passage of cations across biological membranes (Yee et al. 2014). The TRP members share common features including intracellular amino and carboxyl termini, six transmembrane segments with the peptide between segments 5 and 6 forming the channel pore, and the TRP domain consisting of 23–25 amino acids highly conserved among all TRP members. TRP proteins are expressed in both electrically nonexcitable and excitable cells.
