Historical Background

The complement system, the major noncellular component of the innate immune system, is composed of three different pathways: the classical (CP), the lectin (LP), and the alternative pathway (AP). These pathways participate in several processes, including tagging pathogens for phagocytosis, directing destruction of microorganisms, promoting inflammation, contributing to immune complex regulation, and linking the innate and adaptive immune systems. The complement system has two fundamental properties: discriminates self (e.g., host cells) from nonself (e.g., pathogens) and regulates itself to prevent unwanted damage.
