Historical Background

The Ku70/80 heterodimer (also named Lupus Ku autoantigen protein p70 and Lupus Ku autoantigen protein p80) was first isolated from sera of systemic lupus erythematosus patients (LSE) (Reeves 1987). LSE is an autoimmune disease, whereby the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, resulting in red rash, as a response of inflammation.
