Solitary Fibrous Tumor, Mediastinal
Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is usually a well-circumscribed mesenchymal tumor consisting of haphazardly arranged bland spindle cells, thick collagen stroma, and at least focal areas of branching hemangiopericytoma-like blood vessels with biological behavior ranging from benign to malignant.
Although SFT was originally known as a neoplasm of pleura, other serosal surfaces, or mediastinum, it can be found essentially in any location including the meninges. Studies of SFT of the pleura using immunostaining, flow cytometric analysis, and electron microscopy have indicated that SFT likely originates from a submesothelial cell, which has been variably considered to be a mesenchymal cell, a primitive multipotential cell, or a primitive fibroblast.
