Definition
Endovascular therapy is the use of mechanical thrombectomy or thrombus retrieval to remove a blood clot from a blood vessel. While in the past, this procedure required a surgical incision, recent technological developments have enabled most mechanical thrombectomy procedures to be performed percutaneously. The skin and blood vessel are punctured using a catheter, and a mechanical device on the end of the catheter is used to break up or retrieve and remove the thrombus.
Current Knowledge
Current practices related to endovascular therapy are evolving rapidly, based on several recent large multicenter clinical trials.
