Definition

The undertaking of activities or interventions to keep some negative event, such as an illness or injury, from occurring.

Current Knowledge

In neuropsychology, interventions have been designed to aid in the prevention of many different types of injury or illness. There are three major types of prevention:

  • Primary prevention: Interventions to prevent a disease or injury before it ever occurs

  • Secondary prevention: Intervention to reduce the impact of a disease or injury that has occurred, often by detecting and treating the problem as soon as it occurs

  • Tertiary prevention: Interventions aimed at lessening effects of ongoing injury or illness
