Apallesthesia
Definition
The inability to perceive vibration. The ability to detect vibration is thought to be carried primarily by the posterior columns and lemniscal pathways and hence is a standard part of the neurological exam. Loss or asymmetry in the patient’s ability to perceive vibration is usually an indication of posterior column disease or a peripheral neuropathy, such as might be present in diabetes or chronic alcohol abuse.
