Short Description or Definition

Diabetes mellitus is a complex set of metabolic disorders involving chronically high levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) secondary to the impaired production of the hormone, insulin. Classic symptoms include polyuria (excessive urine), polydipsia (intense thirst), polyphagia (intense hunger), and fatigue.

Categorization

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes is much less common, accounting for about 10% of all diagnosed cases, and is characterized by an inability to secrete insulin due to the destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas. This type of diabetes usually is diagnosed before the age 20.
