Short Description or Definition
The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) statement regarding the diagnosis, management, and prevention of COPD (GOLD 2015) defines COPD as a disease that is “characterized by persistent airflow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lung to noxious particles or gases.” The definition includes the fact that exacerbations and comorbidities contribute to the overall severity of disease in individual patients. The GOLD initiative was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) with the first GOLD report published in 2001. The most recent GOLD report and additional information about definitions, diagnosis, treatment, and research can be found at www.goldcopd.com.
