The Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) neuropsychological battery was designed to provide an efficient, standardized method to evaluate cognitive functioning in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Originally employed in a large-scale longitudinal research program, tests were selected to provide coverage of the primary cognitive deficits associated with AD (e.g., memory, language, praxis, and intellectual status) and to have a range of difficulty appropriate for use through much of the course of the disease (Morris et al. 1989). Individual tests within the battery include well-known, commonly used measures such as the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE; Folstein et al. 1975), a 15-item modified Boston Naming Test (Kaplan et al. 1978), and an Animal Naming verbal fluency test (Isaacs and Kennie 1973). Also included are a ten-item word list memory test, with free recall (immediate and delayed) and recognition (delayed)...
