Definition

Job retention is the process of facilitating the tenure of an individual in a particular employment setting. Individuals with disabilities often experience significant work interruption or job loss. Circumstances that may impact retention include: economic; personal, social, and demographic qualities; workplace dynamics; and psychological aspects. Employers can develop retention programs that consider employees with disabilities. Employment practices that can be modified to address employees with disabilities and employment retention include: orientation and onboarding programs, career development programs, mentoring programs, employee resource groups, and return to work programs (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2015).
