Definition

Attendant care involves the provision of services to assist individuals with mental and/or physical disabilities in the performance and/or conduct of activities of daily living in order to maximize community inclusion and independent living. The intent of attendant care is to promote independence, participation, sustainability, and quality of life of the individual while also preventing or reducing the impact of medical problems. Typically, the individual receiving attendant services is unable to perform such tasks independently or may perform them with great difficulty. Attendant services include but are not limited to activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, transferring, mobility, cooking, cleaning, and laundering. Services may also relate to sustaining health such as dispensing medications. However medical services typically are not provided by personel care attendants.
