Definition
Rehabilitation provided in outpatient, community, or residential settings after hospitalization that may include inpatient rehabilitation for a brain injury.
Historical Background
Since the 1980s, decreasing lengths of stay for both acute inpatient medical treatment and inpatient rehabilitation following brain injury (BI) has resulted in increasing emphasis on postacute (post-hospitalization) rehabilitation. A number of approaches to postacute BI rehabilitation have emerged. These approaches share common elements, such as cognitive rehabilitation, behavioral and emotional.

Brain injury often results in residual disabilities that persist following hospital discharge and interfere with reengagement in former activities, work, family, social, and community life.
