Definition
Hypersomnia or excessive sleepiness is a condition in which a person has trouble staying awake during the day. There are many potential causes of hypersomnia including sleep disorders, sleep deprivation, obesity, drug or alcohol abuse, head injury or neurological disease, prescription medications, and genetics. According to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition (ICSD-3), hypersomnia is a symptom of multiple sleep disorders.
