MAST; Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (SMAST)
Description
The Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST: Selzer 1971) contains 25 questions that are answered via a yes/no format. Example items include “Do you ever feel bad about your drinking,” “Have you ever neglected your obligations, your family, or your work for two or more days in a row because you were drinking,” and “Have you ever been arrested, even for a few hours, because of drunk behavior.” One of the unique aspects of the MAST is that “yes” responses are worth 1, 2, or 5 points, based on Selzer’s perception regarding the discriminatory power of the item (one item, assessing attempts to limit drinking to certain times of the day or places, is worth 0 points). For example, endorsing going to the hospital due to drinking is worth 5 points, whereas getting into a fight due to drinking is worth only 1 point.
