Definition
The Reintegration to Normal Living (RNL) index assesses global function in individuals after incapacitating illness or severe trauma (Wood-Dauphinee et al. 1988). It consists of 11 questions with a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) response 10 cm line with anchor points ranging from “does not describe my situation” to “fully describes my situation.” Scoring for each item ranges from one to ten with higher scores corresponding to better reintegration. The scores for each item are summed, yielding a maximum score of 110, and are then proportionally converted to a 100-point scale. Two subscales can be derived: Daily Living and Perception of Self.
The RNL Index was developed in English and French. Alternate versions are available for individuals who use adaptive devices as well as for responses from significant others/caregivers and health-care providers.
