Short Description or Definition

As the name implies, minimal brain dysfunction or damage or impairment, also referred to by its abbreviations as MBD or MBI, implies that the underlying cerebral dysfunction has altered the behavior in some predictable way. These symptoms frequently co-occur with very specific learning limitations (Cantwell and Baker 1991), loss of executive control functions, or with global impairments of social skills or intelligence. There can also be excess or delays in these neurodevelopmental disorders and are terms that predate what the American Psychiatric Association initially labeled as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III, 1980).
