Introduction
The Museums of Malta attempt to preserve and communicate the historical narrative of this small Mediterranean nation. The history of Malta is complex and intertwined with the history of the region and its subsequent rulers. Heritage Malta attempts to communicate this unique message through Malta’s numerous museums. Heritage Malta is the current supervisory body of the museum sector in Malta. Heritage Malta also is responsible for the interpretation and preservation of the World Heritage listed sites on the island; these include the City of Valletta, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, and the Megalithic Temples.
Definition
Malta’s material culture history spans an impressive length of time and encompasses a number of historical narratives: from the ancient temple building culture of approximately 5000 BC, to the Roman Empire, to the crusader knights and a terrifying World War II story. These historical narratives are encapsulated in Heritage Malta’s museum network.
