Ellen F. Wachtel, J.D., Ph.D.


Dr. Ellen F. Wachtel is a prominent figure in the field of family therapy due to her many books and articles that integrate systemic theory with other theoretical perspectives. Wachtel has authored four books, which have been translated into many languages including Japanese, Arabic, and Portuguese. Over the years, she has published more than 15 articles on integrative psychotherapy techniques with couples and families with young children.


In 1967, Wachtel received her J.D. from Harvard law school and spent the majority of her law career doing work related to psychology and family therapy. After advocating for families in the judicial system, Wachtel returned to academia and received her Ph.D. in psychology from New York University in 1974. She did her postdoctoral training at the Ackerman Institute for the Family.
