Volker Thomas
Introduction
Throughout the course of his career, Volker Thomas has been an advocate for social justice in the Couple and Family Therapy field. This social justice lens has guided his research and his mentoring of students and junior faculty. Through these contributions, he has become a recognized leader in advancing issues of diversity and multiculturalism in family therapy.
Career
Volker Thomas, a native of Germany, completed a master’s degree in clinical social work at the University of Kassel in 1979. After receiving his master’s degree, Dr. Thomas worked as a clinical social worker focused on individually oriented psychotherapy in Germany. During this time, he realized the importance of the family context and the need to address that in therapy. In order to pursue family therapy training, Dr. Thomas came to study at the University of Minnesota on a Fulbright grant in 1982.
