Prospective memory (PM) is defined as the ability to complete a planned action at a specified time in the future (Einstein and McDaniel 1990). There are many situations in which an individual needs to do something, but cannot accomplish the goal at the present moment, so the intention must be retained and remembered at an appropriate time. For instance, a student may think about needing to call her mother while taking an exam, but cannot do so until the test is complete and the student is out of the classroom. But will she remember to do so? Is she more likely to forget if distracting events occur right after the test? The study of these processes and the potentially influencing factors is the focus of PM research.
