Definitions

Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) aim to address the issue of spectrum scarcity and meet the ever-increasing spectrum demands. In CRNs, there exist two types of users, i.e., primary users (PUs) and secondary users (SUs), where PUs with licenses can operate in certain spectrum bands, while SUs without licenses seek for access opportunities for transmissions. When cooperation is performed between users, e.g., cooperation between SUs or cooperation between SUs and PUs, the users’ service quality or system performance can be significantly improved, and this type of network is referred to as cooperative cognitive radio networks.
