Definition
From the account of the actions that conditioned relations between Church and the State, and between religion and politics during the secularization process (1870–1930), the radicalism of the secularization model in the country stands out. This is especially notorious when analyzing two of the most distinctive aspects: (i) the institutional marginalization of religious phenomena and their gradual displacement into the private sphere, (ii) the adoption of a highly critical official posture regarding the hegemonic institutional religion (in this case, the Catholic Church). During the last 25 years, some evidence about a certain erosion of the traditional perception of Uruguay as a “laicist country” and a “secularized security” have been shown, meanwhile some significant transformations about the social and political “uses” the Uruguayans make of the religious have become visible.
