Definition

A parallel, hierarchically organized series (i.e., “stream”) of interconnected structures in the occipital and temporal cortex (TC).

Introduction

The ventral visual stream refers to a parallel series of relatively hierarchically organized cortico-cortical projections that arise chiefly from extrastriate visual areas of the occipital cortex and innervate structures in and around the inferior TC (Kravitz et al. 2013). Neighboring cortical structures of the ventral visual stream are typically heavily reciprocally connected, in line with a hierarchical organization of progressive abstraction of visual input.
