Introduction

Eric Kandel is a well-known neuroscientist for his research on memory and learning for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2000. His breakthrough came through his pioneering work with Aplysia, which provided a wealth of information regarding nonassociative learning and its forms.

Eric Kandel’s Biography

Kandel was born in Vienna on the 7th of November 1929. His mother, named Charlotte Zimels, was born in 1897 in Kolomea, which was at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Kolomea is now a part of Ukraine and has been renamed Kolomyya. She came from a well-educated Jewish middle-class family. His father, Hermann Kandel, was born in 1898 in Olesko, a small town and then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire, now part of Ukraine, and was brought up in a poor family.
