Definition
Sustainable facilities management (SFM) consists of a set of articulated practices oriented to adapt buildings to the climate. SFM specifically addresses water and carbon footprint controls and reductions and provides for the opportunity to generate research-based knowledge with collective impact and, ultimately, provides a mechanism for achieving the highest performance standards.
Sustainable facilities management (SFM) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may be understood as the set of necessary operations to control and reduce environmental impact of higher education facilities and their operations while potentially achieving the highest safety and performance standards. An integral approach of SFM in HEIs would also consider research-based generation of knowledge through the application of such procedures as well as the collective impact of these actions through community...
