Localized Juvenile Periodontitis

Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) is a clinical form of aggressive periodontal inflammation during childhood or adolescence. Although single monogenetic defect was not described so far for LAP, it was reported that LAP is linked to human chromosome 1q25 or chromosome 11q14. The latter overlaps a region containing the CTSC gene.


Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) is one of the forms of aggressive periodontitis, characterized by early-onset periodontal inflammation during childhood or adolescence, with rapid alveolar bone loss, tooth mobility, and tooth loss. The process usually involves the first molars and incisors teeth of an otherwise healthy adolescent (Armitage and Cullinan 2010). Epidemiological evidence estimates that LAP affects 0.1–7.6% of children and adolescents worldwide; there is a familial tendency, and in the USA, the disease is more prevalent among African-Americans (Albandar and Tinoco 2002).
